“It gets worse before it gets better,” that’s how I felt about the month of May. If it were a competition for the busiest month (yet), then May definitely has the crown. It even got to a point where we needed to double-check our calendars to avoid schedule conflicts, especially when booking appointments with a doctor. Suffice it to say that we were almost never “home” on weekends in May, and I’m just about ready for this month to be over.
At the beginning of the month, Roan surprised me with something special. I’ll be the annoying person for even mentioning it, but I won’t say anything more. (Hint: You may or may not notice it, though, if you’re keen enough.😉 Haha can it get more vague than that?) Anyway, we spent our first weekend with our main people—Ron, Jan, and Adler—only this time, Jan’s best friend, Jov, joined the crazy bunch! Here’s a little trivia: Jan and I apparently share a small circle of friends or acquaintances because I know Jov from college! She’s a flight attendant and only in town for the weekend, so on her first day back in SoCal, they drove to Carlsbad to see the Flower Fields in full bloom. As much as we’d love to share the experience, however, Roan and I chose to hang out by the Carlsbad Cliffs instead because pollen allergies. We just had brunch by the time we met up with them, so we simply kept them company while they had lunch at Burger Lounge. (In case you’re wondering, it’s one of the best grass-fed burger joints in the West Coast! Not a big burger fan, but seriously.)
Jov wanted to buy a skateboard, but instead of taking them to the outlet next to the Flower Fields, we took them to the Outlets at San Clemente where she found her Star Wars-themed long board. Being the spontaneous couple that we are, Roan and I agreed to drive all the way back to their house to hang out with them longer. We booked a night at a nearby hotel and did some last-minute shopping at Target for basic toiletries and sleepwear to change into. It was definitely one of the best nights we’ve had in a while.
The following week, Roan finally graduated from college. He had an Associate’s Degree in Automotives, but he didn’t work on his Bachelor’s until he got out of the military. I encouraged him to take advantage of his GI Bill while he can, so he took a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice. Most people our age graduated from college ten years earlier, but he still did it, and I couldn’t be more proud (literally teared up when they started marching on)!
I failed to make lunch reservations after the ceremony, but we were lucky to have been accommodated at Tom Ham’s Lighthouse. When asked whether we wanted to sit inside or outside, Roan and I essentially chose outdoor seating because it was such a gorgeous day. I mean, how could you say no to this lovely view?
On Mother’s Day, my brother- and sister-in-law took their mom out, so Roan made sure that we bought her a present since we also planned on shopping for Ron’s [belated] birthday gift and Adler’s baptism gift that weekend.
On May 12th, Paramore released their fifth studio album, After Laughter. Being the Paramore fan that I am, I pre-ordered some Paramore merchandise and registered to TicketMaster’s Verified Fan system in order to get first dibs on concert tickets as soon as pre-sale commenced. On the day of the pre-sale, I couldn’t get tickets even with the verified fan code, and looking at how much ticket prices are at StubHub really got me frustrated. All these on top of existing server issues at work that my boss sent me home to take the rest of the day off. Roan drove me home, and I took a nap as soon as we arrived. Later that afternoon, I decided to take Roan to the beach to shake the exasperated feeling off of me. We went for a semi-hike/walk up and down the hill twice until I’ve exhausted all negative feelings inside me. Sure enough, it was all I needed.
My prayers were answered the following morning when I finally copped concert tickets via the AT&T Pre-Sale! You have no idea how relieved I was to still have that option instead of trying my luck when general tickets went on sale last week. If this doesn’t show how dedicated I am to the band, then I don’t know what is.
Remember this baby that I’m currently obsessed with? Ron and Jan invited us to celebrate Adler Isaiah’s baptism with them, even asking Roan to be his godfather! That pretty much sealed the deal between our friendship, and we are so honored to stand as second parents to this adorable bundle of joy!
On Memorial Day weekend, we hung out for the third time this month. Roan and I decided last-minute to save vacation leave days for another time. We both know that we need some quality time off from work and school soon, and a weekend getaway may not be enough.
How did the month of May treat you? Do tell!
