Insta Lately: Vol. 14

Tonight’s the first time in weeks that I didn’t join my husband to school after work. We both agreed to drop me off at home before Roan heads to school in order to catch up on some household chores. At the back of my mind, I thought I’d squeeze some time to sit down and blog, too. As much as I’d like to lay down and rest for a bit, I went on to do the laundry, clean the kitchen, and prepare our lunch for tomorrow. Blogging hasn’t been a priority these days, obviously, but it doesn’t mean I’ll quit altogether. At least not yet.

In case you didn’t notice, I haven’t been as active on social media except for Twitter, which is accessible at work, but thought I’d follow through on my latest posts on Instagram. (Wow, last installment was in January?)

one. This was taken at the hotel we stayed at in Santa Ana, when Roan went for a 2-day seminar. This piece of art is called The Duke by Drew Shade, which was brilliantly made of license plates. Here’s an explanation behind his unique form of art, which made absolute sense:

“When asked, ‘Why license plates?’ Drew replied, ‘License plates, after all, are more than just 72 square inches of metal; they’re geographical markers. People bring back novely plates from vacations, they personalize the plates on their cars, and kids scour the highway for out of state plates to pass time on road trips.’”

— Drew Shade

two. This photo was taken during one of the few times I went to the VA Hospital with Roan for his doctor’s appointments. These consultations are mandatory to identify his disability ratings for PTSD (e.g., hearing loss, sleep apnea, combat-related injuries, etc.). | three. I took this photo as we stroll on the beach on Valentine’s Eve. Talk about perfect timing.

four. Roan and I both love a good ramen. Although parking space is always a hit-or-miss Downtown, we took a risk to dine at Under Belly in Little Italy on a weekend to see what the hype is all about. It was absolutely perfect. If you’re in San Diego, you’ve got to give it a try! | five. I’ve mentioned before that in the six years we’ve been together, we never got a chance to celebrate Valentine’s Day. While we’re not big on this particular occasion, it’d be nice to have at least one memory of this holiday. This year, he booked tickets to go whale watching in Dana Point. It was a cold, gloomy day, and our sea friends had been evasive that we only got to see a portion of a gray whale’s tail before it dived back into the ocean. Roan was kind of disappointed, but I still enjoyed our little (mis)adventure. Still something to remember Valentine’s Day by! | six. My photo caption on Instagram was slightly inappropriate since this is in fact a memorial bench in honor of Sgt. Dan “Skydog” Highland who used to frequently stop at the South Cardiff State Beach parking lot on his way home from work.

seven. I got myself a “nifty fifty” 50mm f/1.8 prime lens for my mirrorless camera around the time I took this photo, and I’ve been loving the significant difference in depth of field using my new toy. | eight. Roan and I decided to walk along the highway while we had our vehicle serviced. We passed by this train track, and Roan egged me to take a death-defying shot of it in the middle of the highway. | nine. Just another #fromwhereistand photo post-running at Torrey Pines State Beach. During low tide, it reveals a rocky shore.

P.S. Dear reader, thank you for sticking around. You rock.
